Shape Ranch
Our Ranch
In the family since 1932 and history beyond...
The origins of the Shape ranch go back to 1811 when King Philip of Spain bequeathed a tract of land to Juan Francisco Lombrano. According to legend, he gained all the land he covered on horseback in a single day. He raised cattle and horses in the thick brush of what would become northern Mexico and southern Texas. The ranch changed ownership many times through the rest of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. In 1932 it was purchased by H.A. Fitzsimons Sr. and has been in the Fitzsimons family ever since. In 1998 we made the switch from cattle to bison. We have always believed that grass fed bison is the most healthy and delicious red meat when raised and harvested with respect. The bison are naturally strong and hearty animals having survived two extreme droughts in 2011 and 2019. With our philosophy of slow and regenerative production we plan on raising these magnificent animals for generations to come.
The Shape Ranch is an acronym for the five members of the Fitzsimons family, Sarah, Hugh, Asa, Patrick and Evelyn. It lies in the area of Texas know as the Wintergarden which encompass Frio and Dimmit county in south Texas between San Antonio and Laredo. The place got its name from the large amounts of Onions, Cabbage, Spinach and Citrus grown on the many small farms in the area.
